"Every day is Clay Day!"

For primary or elementary school students: Cindy Clarke has been a professional potter and instructor for over 35 years. Cindy began taking clay to schools when her own children were of elementary age in Dawson Creek, BC, and later as a teacher's aide in Edson, Alberta. She has a unique approach that is popular with students, parents, and teachers alike.(See our "Mission Statement") Fun with clay for kids of all ages, beginning with an introduction to clay, "What clay is and what clay isn't", and an optional wheel throwing demonstration on a real potter's wheel, (not a homebuilt toy!). Cindy explains the difference between pottery and sculpture, and then moves on to teach a clay hand building sculpture project of your choice and her own design to your class, using the methods specified in the Alberta Elementary Art Program of Study; simple clay modelling techniques of rolling, pinching, adding, pressing, making coils, slabs, and texturing to create a curriculum related or fun based sculpture. Jim Willett has fifteen years of experience in clay and teams with Cindy in the classroom to offer additional guidance in each workshop. For more details read the Frequently Asked Questions page or contact us.

For junior high and secondary students: Cindy and Jim present a workshop which will demonstrate all aspects of pottery making such as wedging, centering, opening, throwing basic and advanced forms, trimming, and then discuss drying, bisquing, glazing and firing. Advanced handbuilding projects are very popular. They will involve the students in a hands on pottery making demonstration, and will also discuss career related topics with the students. If you are interested in booking us for a school visit please phone or email a few weeks in advance.

Professional Development Workshops: Let The Clay Teacher show you just how easy it is to reincorporate clay into your school arts curriculum.
